Euroroute Network Solutions
Euroroute Meets Andy Woolhead
– VP of Sales UK and Ireland
1. The UK Fibre Market’s Next Phase
The UK fibre market has moved rapidly from network build-out to a greater focus on profitability and retention. What do you think operators need to prioritise over the next 2–3 years to succeed in this next phase?
Crucial to success will be the first steps for operators to convert premises passed to premises connected. In order to maximise profitability and retention, operators should seek to deploy incremental services such as VoIP and Wi-Fi management-insights both of which are natively supported across Icotera CPE.
2. Beyond Price Alone
Many operators are under pressure to control costs, but customer experience remains critical. How do you see leading operators balancing price, service quality, and long-term customer retention?
Differentiation through value-added services such as VPN, Anti-virus and parental control applications are great enhancements to the customer experience as are Wi-Fi offerings that provide significantly greater coverage and throughput which also reduce the cost of support in addition to reduced customer churn.
3. Why Premium Connectivity Matters
What separates a premium broadband experience from a standard one, and why is this becoming more important as competition increases across the UK and Ireland?
The emphasis on a premium (reliable and stable) broadband connection is ultimately the customer expectation and subsequent experience. Many operators are reliant on sub-standard equipment which cannot handle the increasing demands on smart home environments. More consumers than ever are streaming content (music / video) often concurrently and in most cases, over Wi-Fi, which magnifies the importance of CPE features such as Multi-link Operation / Channel Puncturing / MU-MIMO / antenna array all of which vastly improve the customer experience.
4. The Role of Managed Wi-Fi
How do you see managed Wi-Fi evolving over the next few years, and what opportunities does it create for operators looking to differentiate their services?
As the proliferation of devices increases in the average home (steered by smart / IOT devices) and on-demand streaming services become more widely adopted, Wi-Fi coverage and stability will become increasingly critical for users. This will create opportunity for operators to monetise Wi-Fi through opex models to offer consumers reliable whole-home-Wi-Fi as well as the ability to self manage their networks through the support of prpl and their open-ecosystem software.
5. Challenges Operators Are Still Underestimating
Looking across the UK and Ireland, what challenges do you think operators are still underestimating as networks mature and competition increases?
A lot of operators are rushing to adopt Wi-Fi 7 but understanding the technology and use case are key to successful deployment. Multi-gig awareness is also increasing amongst consumers and the key for operators to maximise profitability and retention is to ensure that >1G tariffs are priced at a premium with a high performance gateway to offer best-in-class Wi-Fi throughput with futureproofing to accommodate increasing speeds.
6. The Importance of Open Ecosystems
As operators invest in new fibre infrastructure, how important are interoperability, flexibility, and avoiding vendor lock-in when making long-term technology decisions?
The ISP market is ever-evolving and what may seem like a compelling proposition today can quickly become a headache down the line. Icotera intentionally maintain a vendor agnostic approach across our hardware portfolio providing operators with the flexibility to integrate with multi-vendor ecosytems for interoperability and device management. This provides operators with greater control, flexibility and pricing parity over their infrastructure and installed base estate.
7. Building Stronger Operator Partnerships
When operators work closely with Icotera, what outcomes are they typically looking to achieve beyond simply deploying new hardware?
Our partnerships with operators go beyond short term problem solving with a view to building long term strategic relationships that adopt operators’ feedback and challenges. Operators seeking partnership with Icotera are broadly looking to reduce support costs (contact centre & truck rolls) as well as reducing churn through adoption of market leading technologies to exemplify the customer experience through reliable and stable wired and wireless connectivity. Icotera provide operators with the flexibility to offer incremental services to consumers through our partnerships with the likes of prpl and Qualcomm that enable operators to maximise ARPU and offer true differentiation vs their competitors.
